Swain’s Ln., London, England N6 6PJ, United Kingdom

Although Highgate is not London’s oldest cemetery, it’s certainly one of the best known. Consecrated in 1839, the 37-acre site now contains more than 53,000 graves in two sections, the East Cemetery and the West Cemetery. Of particular interest are the Circle of Lebanon—a ring of vaults built around a centuries-old cedar tree—and the graves of such notable people as Karl Marx and George Eliot, who is buried under the name Mary Anne Cross. The east side is open to the public, but the west is accessible only through an hour-long tour which should be booked in advance.
