This iconic property may be an official resort of HersheyPark, but it's also a destination unto itself. Originally built by Milton S. Hershey in the middle of the Great Depression, the original hotel had 170 rooms with Mediterranean flair and a Cuban-inspired lobby (the chocolate magnate owned sugar plantations on the island). Today, there are 276 rooms, a 40,000-square-foot spa, three restaurants, and hiking trails throughout the ground's 300 acres. Guests can also look forward to a grass putting course, new fitness center, and a renovated indoor pool, all opening May 2014.

Room to Book:

Large families or groups should opt for one of the 10 Woodside Cottages, which sleep eight to 12 guests. Communal great rooms have cathedral ceilings and grand fireplaces; sprawling porches overlook the resort's surrounding forest.

Insider Tip:

Take the complimentary hotel legacy tour—led by resident historian Al Rossi and held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday—to hear about the resort's all-American past.
