The beach at this bay on Oahu’s North Shore was made world famous in 1957, when a group of surfers braved the winter swells (which reach heights up to 30 feet) that had never previously been ridden. Today, Waimea is home to the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational every January (if waves reach a minimum of 20 feet) but mostly it’s a place for families and groups of friends to picnic, lay out, and frolic in the ocean—especially in the summer, when the water is typically calm and swimmable.
