Kua 'Aina

66-160 Kamehameha Hwy.
Haleiwa, Oahu, HI, 96712, United States
TEL: (808) 637-6067

A favorite of President Barack Obama, this casual burger joint is located across the street from the Haleiwa Shopping Plaza on the North Shore. First established in 1975, the restaurant is now an international chain with outposts in London and Japan. At this no-frills flagship, limited seating is available inside, surrounded by mounted surfboards, as well as outside on the umbrella-shaded patio. Menu specialties include the char-grilled mahi mahi sandwich and the handmade burgers, which are topped with island-style ingredients like fresh pineapple, grilled Maui onions, Ortega chiles, and avocado halves. Matchstick fries are the signature side dish.

Insider Tip:

For dessert, walk three minutes north along the highway to Matsumoto Shave Ice. The famous stand serves shaved ice in flavors like coconut, green tea, lychee, and lilikoi (passion fruit).
