With its dramatic landscape of winding rivers and limestone karsts, Guilin has inspired painters and travelers for centuries. But until Shangri-La unveiled this sleek property four years ago, there weren’t a lot of hotel options. Thanks to its prime location along the Li River, all 449 rooms—kitted out with neutral-toned silks, dark woods, and classical Chinese murals—have stunning views of the surrounding countryside. It’s the perfect base to explore the area. Ask the concierge about bicycle rentals or sign up for a 90-minute river cruise of some of the region’s most famous sights, including Nine Horse Hill, and then cap the day with a hot stone massage at the spa. Need a break from sightseeing? The hotel’s two swimming pools, state-of-the-art gym, and outdoor tennis courts provide plenty of diversion. Another highlight: Guilin specialties—including stir-fried river shrimp with leek and braised wild mushrooms with chile—at the hotel’s Shang Palace restaurant. Some ingredients come straight from the chef’s organic garden.

Room to Book:

The Horizon River View rooms on the sixth floor feature sweeping panoramas and club access.

Insider Tip:

Arrange a day trip to the dramatic Dragon’s Back rice terraces, a two-hour drive from Guilin. Once there, be sure to pick up some pieces of elaborate embroidery by the Miao ethnic group.
