The Kapawi Ecolodge and Reserve is an experiment in sustainable ecotourism. Five years ago the original developers gave it back, as agreed, to the Achuar tribe, who operate it and make up 80 percent of the staff. Meager profits flow back into the surrounding Achuar communities, which have been able to build schools; they allow lodge guests to visit.
