The 147-room Proximity Hotel was the first property in the country to achieve LEED Platinum certification. The structure, which uses about 45 percent less energy than comparable properties, has solar panels, heat-deflecting rooftop plants, and an eco-friendly elevator. Though the hotel has more than 70 building elements that make it energy efficient, they’re mostly behind the scenes. What is more noteworthy on the surface level is the hotel’s industrial-chic design. The soaring lobby has spiraling metalstaircases, a 28-foot mohair sofa, and a steel front desk that appears to float aboveground. Locals love the Print Works Bistro—named after one of the city’s historic cotton mills—for its live music, Prince Edward Island mussels, and thoughtful wine menu.
