Husband-and-wife team Marco Moreira and Jo-Ann Makovitzky combined their backgrounds in sushi (Marco) and classic French cuisine (Jo-Ann) to open Union Square’s Tocqueville in 2000. The spacious, high-ceilinged dining room is designed with light yellow walls, vibrant contemporary artwork, and a large chandelier. Incorporating Japanese, Continental, and American flavors, the ever-changing menu may include such specialties as the California sea urchin and angel hair carbonara and the seared diver sea scallops with foie gras. Tocqueville also offers an affordable prix fixe lunch menu and a summertime Greenmarket Menu, which showcases fresh ingredients from the nearby Union Square Greenmarket.

Insider Tip:

Portions are small, so if you’re ordering á la carte, make sure to include one of Tocqueville’s signature appetizers, such as the truffled parmesan grits with egg and bacon.
