This huge complex on a private peninsula jutting out into the Saronic Gulf is a legendary resort (look for its bungalows in classic Greek films of the 1960s) that has had a major makeover in the last few years. On a 75-acre private peninsula in the so-called Athenian Riviera, the original complex’s three hotels are separately managed entities: the 162-room Westin, the 123-room Arion Resort and Spa, and opening in 2011, the W Athens. Guests at one hotel can use the amenities at the others, including beaches and restaurants—to name a few, the gourmet modern-Greek Blue Hytra; outdoor, down-to-earth Taverna 37; and sushi restaurant Matsuhisa Athens, by celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa. The blocky buildings themselves betray their 1960s origins, but inside they’re clean-lined contemporary, with spectacular sea views. This relaxing getaway is only about 15 miles from both central Athens and the airport, but due to the notorious traffic don’t expect to get anywhere fast—other than the beach.
Room to Book: One of the Arion’s 58 private bungalows with a private seaside pool.
A 20-minute walk into the town of Vouliagmeni yields some excellent restaurants that are easier on the wallet.
