Those who grew up reading The Call of the Wild and White Fang will get a kick out of visiting author Jack London’s onetime homestead. Manuscripts and other mementos of London’s are on display here, in the cottage where he lived and wrote for the last 11 years of his life (he died in 1916). Even for non-lit-buffs, though, the surrounding 1,400-acre park, with numerous hiking trails winding among redwoods, oak forests, and rolling meadows, is a lovely place to visit.

Insider Tip:

For a stunning all-day hike, pack a picnic and take the 10-mile (round trip) Sonoma Ridge Trail, which leads to glittering Bathhouse Lake and panoramic vineyard views.
