Mamacas

41 Persephonis
Athens, 11854, Greece
TEL: 30 210 346-4984

The owners of Mamacas were visionaries when, in 1998, they opened this neo-taverna in Gazi, the then troubled, now trendy gasworks district of Athens. They were also mama’s boys, naming the restaurant in honor of their mothers and serving cuisine that pays homage to Mom’s cooking, heavy on veggie-rich appetizers (the zucchini in cream cheese is a favorite) and simple grilled meats. Opposite the defunct gasworks, now a concert and exhibit center, this simple Neoclassical building has a wine cellar and a rooftop space with Acropolis views. Today Gazi is filled with so many trendy bars and restaurants that Mamacas is the “grandmamma”: a restful, grown-up oasis in a cluster of crowded hot spots, where you can experience the action, enjoy delicious food, and still hear your friends speak.

Insider Tip:

Many restaurants close for the entire month of August, but Mamacas is closed only on August 14, 15, and 16, so it’s a good option while the rest of Athens is on vacation.
