Looking to play castaway? The Tikehau Pearl Beach Resort may be your paradise. Opened in 2001 in the Tuamotu archipelago of central French Polynesia, the Tikehau Pearl Beach Resort is set on the eastern edge of a coral atoll; the only way to get there is a one-hour flight from Tahiti, followed by a boat trip across a lagoon filled with ribbons of coral. Although the overwater rooms are impressive, this is one of the few places in the South Pacific where the beachfront bungalows—located on a stretch of pink sand—are just as covetable. Designed with couples in mind, romantic experiences (barefoot sunrise breakfasts; lunch for two on a secluded deserted island; couples’ massages in a thatched-roof fare on the beach) pepper your stay. Don’t miss the Polynesian cultural show on Saturday nights, which includes a five-piece island band and dance show performed by children from the local village.

Room to Book:

The resort’s eight overwater suites provide direct access to the lagoon, but the beach bungalows offer the best value for money. Those on the tiny island’s western shore have unobstructed views.

Insider Tip:

Spend the day on one of the uninhabited motus just north of the resort, along the eastern edge of the atoll. The best way to get there? By kayak.
