Morse's Sauerkraut
Waldoboro, ME, 04572, United States
TEL: (866) 832-5569
Seven miles from U.S. Route 1 (turnoff opposite Moody’s Diner) is a Teutonic gourmand paradise. Founded in 1918, this friendly family-run operation—where it appears to be Christmas all year round—does a brisk business in delicious edible products from Deutschland. The jumbled Kris Kringle–tinged décor is festive, and the shop is almost always crowded, especially around the holidays, with locals ordering imported hams, sauerbraten, and pots of Maine-style baked beans in molasses. It sells six kinds of liverwurst and 20 styles of sausage, and also offers free tastings of its own excellent sour mustard pickles and signature fresh sauerkraut.
Insider Tip:
Time your visit for lunch (think crispy pork schnitzel, tangy German potato salad, and deliciously sharp “Rat” mac and cheese) in the atmospheric on-site café, Kraut Haus; you’ll feel like you’ve tumbled into Bavaria.
