Via Ricasoli 58, Florence, 50121, Italy

The people who wait in line for hours to get into this gallery are here to see one thing and one thing only; Michelangelo's celebrated David, the world's most famous nude statue. Carved in 1504 from a single block of milky-white Carrara marble, he stands on a plinth in his own atrium in the gallery, surrounded by ogling fans. Have a good look by all means, but don't miss the gallery's other master works that include Michelangelo's four Slaves (also known as the Nonfiniti, or unfinished) which seem to burst from their stone prison. There are some very fine medieval and Mannerist paintings, too, and a magnificent collection of early musical instruments, which includes several Stradivarius violins.
