Piazza del Carmine, Florence, 50125, Italy

features

Quirky/offbeat, Off the beaten path

Hidden away off a quiet piazza in the Oltrarno neighborhood south of the river Arno, this small chapel packs a huge punch in artistic terms, for it was here during the 15th century that the new rules of perspective which were to have a profound influence on the Florentine Renaissance were fully established by three great artists: Masolino, his pupil Masaccio, and Filippino Lippi. The entire walls of the small room are covered with magnificent paintings illustrating scenes from the bible. The most famous are those by Masaccio on the upper row, depicting Adam and Eve being tempted by the serpent and, finally, being cast out of the Garden of Eden. Unmissable.
