Great value, Local haunt, Casual

Blink and you'll miss it: flanking the colorful Sant'Ambrogio market, this tiny squeeze of a sandwich bar is always packed with a good mix of locals and tourists, and is only open between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It sells only one kind of sandwich, a small, round 'semel' panino stuffed with a limited choice of daily fillings that range from pecorino cheese and honey to more unusual combos, such as wild boar with blackcurrants and polenta, anchovies with orange, or even donkey stew. There's nowhere to sit (unless you count a couple of tall stools), so you'll probably have to eat on the street, but this is one of the best sandwich bars in town.
