Tribewanted: Vorovoro

Cross Island Rd.
Vorovoro Island, Fiji
TEL: (800) 781-4040

Vorovoro Island is home to only one tourism effort—the Tribewanted project, which invites visitors to participate in volunteer projects to support the local economy. A week-long stay requires a paid tribal membership, a donation of kava root, and something from the island wish list, such as books for the library. The modest accommodations include six-bed and 12-bed dorms, a five-person bungalow, and a tree house. In addition to volunteer activities like tending the community gardens, Tribewanted organizes leisure activities such as surfing, swimming, and learning the meke (traditional Fijian dance). Meals incorporate locally harvested produce and freshly caught fish.

Insider Tip:

Don’t miss the traditional grog (kava) drinking ceremony. “Low tide” means you want your cup half full; “high tide” means you want it filled to the brim.
