Located in Islington, Club Surya bills itself as the world’s first eco-friendly nightclub. Created by property developer Andrew Charalambous, a.k.a. Dr. Earth, the club features neon lighting and furnishings made from recycled objects, including bottle chandeliers, a wall of CD’s, and a sofa crafted from a ceramic bathtub. Environmentally friendly practices also include low-flush toilets, polycarbon cups, and solar panels—appropriate for a venue named after the Hindu sun god. The club’s most notable feature, however, is the dance floor; as patrons groove to music spun by live DJ’s, the floor harnesses the power of movement to generate electricity.
