Spice Bazaar and Tahtakale
Also known as the Egyptian or Gypsy Bazaar, this covered market’s main attraction isn’t, sadly, the eponymous spices (no, that’s not real saffron at an unbelievably low price—it’s safflower, which isn’t the same thing at all). What does make it well worth a visit are the mounds of delectable snacks; there’s no better place to sample treats like Turkish delight, sticky confections of figs and honey, baklava with walnuts, and batter-fried cakes soaked in syrup.
Try asking the shopkeepers in and around the Spice Bazaar to show you the incredibly cool tunnels and storage rooms where they store their trinkets. They can’t figure out why anyone would think the ancient caverns and ruins (as opposed to the mass-manufactured faux-Ottoman slippers) are so interesting but they’re often happy to show you.
