Dennis Severs House

18 Folgate St.
London, England, E1 6BX, United Kingdom
TEL: 44-20-7247-4013

Inside this 1724 Georgian residence is a “still-life drama” created by late American artist Dennis Severs. Severs, who lived here from 1979 until his death in 1999, designed all 10 rooms to sound, smell, look, and feel as if a fictitious family of 18th-century Huguenot silk weavers left the house only moments before. Candlelight and fireplaces illuminate the interior, and half-written shopping lists, unmade beds, the aroma of cooking food, and the sound of whispering voices mingling with carriages passing by outside fill the rooms. Visitors are encouraged to tour the house in total silence.

Insider Tip:

Look closely at the tiles lining the bedroom fireplace; designed by craftsman Simon Pettet, they resemble authentic 17th-century Delft tiles, but actually depict images of 20th-century artists and appliances.
