Casa Bonita
Barahona, Dominican Republic

Forgo the mega-resorts of the Dominican Republic in favor of this small, modern hotel, formerly a well-heeled family’s summer residence in Barahona, on the island’s quiet southwestern shore. The streamlined design is courtesy of architect Rafael Selman, who added a mountaintop infinity pool and open-air whirlpool to the 12-room property, where white-on-white spaces are accented by natural higüero wood. The location has a St. Lucia-meet-Costa Rica feel: in-room balconies overlook the Caribbean and the leafy Sierra Barahuco Mountains, and the charming restaurant serves local fare grown in the on-site vegetable patch. Unexpectedly for such an out-of-the-way spot, the staffers at the riverside spa, Tanama, offer a standout hot-stone massage.
Room to Book:
The upper-floor cabana rooms are closest to the infinity pool.
Insider Tip:
In the early afternoon, pick peaches, papayas, and oranges off the hotel’s trees, and staffers will blend the fruit into a smoothie to cool-off poolside.
