Things to do in Darjeeling + Eastern India

Much of the appeal of Darjeeling is wandering its streets, dotted with colonial-era cottages and views of the valleys and peaks of the Himalayas. A hot toddy, or tea and pastries, by a roaring fireplace is as much a part of the Darjeeling experience as any other activities, but there are some sights every traveler should see:

  • Tiger Hill. About 7 miles out of town, Tiger Hill has stunning views of the Himalayan peaks, including Mt. Everest.
  • Ghum's Buddhist monasteries. The town of Ghum is home to a number of Buddhist monasteries, the most famous is Yiga Choling Gompa, noteworthy for its fifteen-foot tall statue of Maitreya Buddha and murals.
  • The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Also known as "the toy train," this engineering wonder is a UNESCO Heritage site. The narrow railway ascends some 50 miles from the plains to Darjeeling, with countless switch backs and panoramic views along the way.
  • The Mountaineering Museum. Founded in 1957, this museum's displays capture the excitement and challenges of climbing in the Himalayas, including a large section on the various ascents of Everest.
