Kirk Douglas, the legendary actor who got his start onstage but became best known for playing Spartacus onscreen, helped inspired the Center Theatre Group to renovate this bygone movie palace in downtown Culver City, which dates back to 1947. The Kirk Douglas Theatre reopened in 2004, keeping the Culver’s historic Art Deco façade and Neon-clad spire, and narrowing the structure to 317 red seats. Artistic Director Michael Ritchie started overseeing productions beginning in the 2005-2006 season, including a nouveau vaudeville show by Trey Lyford and Geoff Sobelle called “All Wear Bowlers,” and a musical about our seventh President called “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.”
