Crete Travel Guide

With its long history and natural beauty, you'll likely find that there's more on your list of things to do in Crete than you can accomplish in one trip, but here are some places to start:
Knossos Palace. Near Iraklion, this palace was the center of the Minoan civilization and some parts of the vast complex of interconnected rooms and chambers date from as early as 2,000 BC. The palace is also famously the inspiration for the tale of the minotaur and the labyrinth.
Samaria Gorge. Hikers will want to walk the length of the dramatic Samaria Gorge on the southern coast of the island in the White Mountains. The gorge is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and home to the rare Cretan goat and several other endemic species.
Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Iraklion is the bustling and crowded capital of Crete and most travelers pass through it quickly, but the Heraklion Archaeological Museum provides a reason to spend an afternoon here. Most of the Minoan treasures found at Knossos and other sites are now found here.
