Just 35 miles south of the city, and right in the heart of the beautiful Wicklow Mountains National Park, the hamlet of Glendalough makes a magical day trip from Dublin. Occupying a pastoral valley, where two dark glittering lakes are overlooked by a ruined monastery (complete with 110-foot-high tower), Glendalough has a network of well-marked walking trails through oak forests, alongside waterfalls, and up to sweeping hillside vistas. Think twice about coming on a Sunday in summertime, though—that’s when the crowds converge here.
