Costa Rica

Hacienda Tayutic

Sitio de Mata
Turrialba, Cartago, Costa Rica
TEL: 506-2538-1717

Costa Rica isn’t just about the beaches, and this hillside hacienda proves it. Nestled in the volcanic peaks of the central highland province of Cartago, the six-room lodge offers 180-degree views of the coffee plantation–filled valleys, the Turrialba and Irazú volcanoes, and Angostura Lake. The family-owned retreat feels more like a classy farmhouse than a traditional hacienda, with wood-beamed ceilings and antique wrought-iron beds. And although it may be remote and isolated, there’s plenty to do: guests tour the orchid greenhouse, learn about sugarcane and coffee growing; then, depending on the preferred level of activity, take a stroll through the gardens’ giant chessboard or don a bathing suit for either the swimming pool or rafting on the Pacuare and Pejibaye rivers.

Room to Book:

For the best views down the green valleys, choose the Bere Room, with a private balcony and unadulterated panoramas.

Insider Tip:

Although not advertised, the chef will be happy to create a personal cooking lesson in the kitchen, focusing on local dishes, such as fried plantain patacones with black bean dip and herbs grown on-site.
