Coogee
A Fish Called Coogee
Sydney, New South Wales, 2034, Australia
Just down the street from Coogee Beach, this cash-only seafood joint serves an unusually varied menu compared to the average fish-and-chips restaurant. Inside, the dining area contains simple wooden furniture, an open kitchen, and a glass case lined with fresh seafood bought daily from local markets. Priced by weight and cooked to order, options may include barbecued shrimp, chili-lime octopus, and barramundi marinated in a soy-based Balinese sauce. The menu also has a limited number of side items, such as hand-cut chips and charred corn. The dining room is usually packed, but additional picnic-style tables are available outside.
Insider Tip:
If you want to take advantage of the restaurant's BYO policy, stop by the neighboring Coogee Bay Hotel, which contains two liquor stores selling more than 1,000 bottles of wine.
