Clare Valley
North Bundaleer Homestead
This 1901 house once anchored a single 23,000-acre farm; by the 1970’s the pastureland had been subdivided and the house abandoned. But in 2002 the Victorian spread was rescued and converted into an inn. A herculean restoration uncovered William Morris wallpapers, original stained-glass windows, and traces of an elaborate drawing-room frieze, which a painter was hired to re-create. Rooms were updated with mahogany furniture, Chinese screens, and vases of flowers fresh from the garden. The meals are a similar mix of tradition and inspiration—roast beef comes with suet pudding and bordelaise sauce, rhubarb tart is made with mille-feuille—and are accompanied by wines from the nearby Clare Valley.
