City Center
Photographers Gallery ZA
Located in a whitewashed townhouse in the city center, this contemporary art gallery showcases the work of midcareer local photographers, such as Roger Ballen and Jurgen Schadeberg, as well as international photographers like Jan Smith from Mexico and Nicola Vinci from Italy. Founded by curator Heidi Erdmann, the gallery was established to promote forward-thinking artists who expand the limits of photography as a medium. The narrow, white-walled space is also home to a sister gallery, Erdmann Contemporary, which exhibits the work of South African painters, sculptors, comic artists, and printmakers.
Insider Tip:
After exploring the gallery, walk down the street to the Africa Café for a “community feast” of traditional cuisine from around the continent.
