Chinatown
Mother Chu's Taiwanese Gourmet
Shop 1–4
Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia
Not to be confused with the local vegetarian restaurant of the same name, this Chinatown restaurant serves traditional Taiwanese fare in a small, often crowded space at the end of the Dixon Street pedestrian mall. The dining room contains a handful of tables and Asian-inspired art prints, and additional seating is available outside beneath a pagoda-style eave hung with bright red lanterns. Prepared by hand in the open kitchen, the specialties here include pan-fried pork or beef dumplings, and yu tiao (fried bread sticks) wrapped in sticky rice or spring onion pancakes.
Insider Tip:
After your meal, walk to the nearby Emperor’s Garden Cake & Bakery to pick up a batch of the signature Emperor’s Puffs: small dough pillows filled with sweet egg custard.
