For where to stay in Charleston, options run the gamut from traditional to contemporary, grand to boutique, urban to countryside to waterfront. Certain stalwarts still reign downtown, such as Planters Inn, Belmond Charleston Place, and the Mills House, but some of the best hotels in Charleston are new venues that offer fresh alternatives, particularly Zero George, the expanded Restoration on King, the Spectator Hotel, Grand Bohemian, and the utterly transformed Vendue art hotel. Many historic homes have been converted beautifully into inns and B&Bs equipped with modern amenities (Wentworth Mansion, John Rutledge House, Governor’s House, Jasmine House), and certain private short-term rentals are little-known gems (Beaufain Street Apartments, Zero Water Street, The Quarters on King). Charleston is intimate in scale, so no matter which hotel you pick, you’ll be well positioned.
