Charlestonians have mingled over strong beverages for centuries, whether plotting against Colonial rule at pre-Revolutionary McCrady’s Tavern or sipping Madeira behind private gates. These days, great drinking holes abound and Charleston nightlife is rich in offerings. Whiskey-centric newcomer Mash Bar mixes it up with arcade games and bocce courts; downhome dives like The Royal American serve up bodacious burgers and live music; The Belmont exudes retro elegance; and intensely creative farm-to-shaker venues like The Gin Joint, Proof, and the Cocktail Club keep sophisticated palates hooked. A smattering of rooftop bars (Stars, the Pavilion Bar, Rooftop at The Vendue, and the Grand Bohemian) offer ways to experience Charleston’s moderate weather and catch the sunset over a drink or two, and most bars do a good job of representing the area’s distilleries and breweries. The one thing you will not find in Charleston is a hopping 3 a.m. nightlife (not a public one, anyway), as city ordinances require last calls at 2 a.m., and some officials are debating whether to reign in the witching hour even further.
