Gary’s Surf School
Balmoral Building
Cape Town, 7945, South Africa
Surf culture is deeply entrenched in South Africa; boys and girls here start catching gnarly waves as early as kindergarten. The warm, relatively calm waters of False Bay are where most Capetonians develop their surfing legs—and where you can get yours. Operating from Muizenberg Beach, Gary’s is the oldest surfing school in the country, offering equipment rentals as well as lessons. Since there are no more than two students per instructor, you’ll get lots of attention with minimal embarrassment. Two-hour lessons are offered several times daily and cost about $65 for adults, $50 for children. Book at least one day in advance.
Insider Tip: Lesson fees include equipment rental for the whole day, so if you’re keen to practice your newly acquired skills, book a 9 a.m. or 11 a.m. lesson.
