Cape Town

False Bay Coastline

Cape Town, South Africa

A drive along the westerly, warmer-watered side of the peninsula brings you through quaint villages and laid-back surfer communities. Start by taking the M3 south from Cape Town to Muizenberg—once an upmarket Jewish summer enclave, it’s now a hub for the surfing set and is filled with quirky cafés and artisanal bakeries. Continue down the peninsula past Simonstown to Boulders Beach, home to a colony of jackass penguins, so called for their hilarious braying style. Then, heading back toward Muizenberg, stop by the artsy fishing village of Kalk Bay, crammed with bohemian shops and sophisticated art galleries. Have a beer at the Polana, a Portuguese-inspired restaurant with a bar that juts out over boulder-crashing waves, or head to Kalky’s (011-27-21-788-1726), a no-fuss seafood house where you’ll find the best fish and chips in Cape Town.
