Calistoga
Clos Pegase
Calistoga, CA, 94515, United States
Architect Michael Graves turned to the ancient civilivations of the Mediterrean when considering the Postmodern design of Clos Pegase. The god of wine, Dionysus, figures prominently throughout the grounds and main building, which was inspired by a temple on Crete. The estate vineyards comprise 90 acres northern Calistoga and over 300 acres in the cooler Los Carneros appelation, enabling owners Jan and Mitsuko Shrem to produce several varietals thanks to the varied temperature and growing conditions of the two regions. Visitors may take self-guided tours of the facility without reservations or can join a guided tour (offered twice daily) of the estate, which includes some 20,000 square feet of underground caves.
Insider Tip:
Pieces from Jan’s personal collection of art are on display in the estate's sculpture garden, including a sculpture of Gaia by Henry Moore and surrealist piece by Jean Dubuffet.
