Cafayate

Cafayate Travel Guide

Owner and enologist José Luis Mounier worked 18 years at Bodegas Etchart, Salta’s largest producer, before planting grapes on a slope he’d cleared. He has Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the brutishly tannic Tannat, but his best wine is white, a floral but flinty Torrontés.

Winemaker Michel Rolland has created superb Malbec and Cabernet blends at this boutique Argentinian winery.

In the ruin's small museum, examine arrowheads and pottery shards; outside scramble over rock walls and peer into the stone houses built into the cliffs. To reach the shrines atop the village's tallest peaks, hike straight up the trail for 20 minutes.
