For an introduction to the gaucho lifestyle without leaving the city, check out this weekend fair in the meatpackers’ district. Steaks and sausages sizzle on vast grills, folk musicians and handkerchief-waving dancers perform on the stage and in the streets, and craftsmen sell wooden goods, homemade wine, and quince paste. Look out for people playing a sport on horseback called corrida de sortija, in which gauchos thread a needle through a ring at a full gallop—it’s a mind-blowing experience to watch. The market is open on Sundays starting at 11 a.m. and Saturday evenings in summer.
