Budapest
First Strudel House of Pest
Budapest, Hungary
This uncommon cafe and restaurant in the city center has a singular passion: the preparation, and preservation of Hungarian strudel. Occupying a historic 1812 building near Stveti Stefan square, First Strudel House serves hardy Hungarian fare alongside a massive selection of hand-made strudels: cottage cheese, apple, sour cherry, and cabbage are among the eclectic flavor offerings. In addition to selling pastries, First Strudel House embraces education, offering an interactive strudel-making demonstration and a 12-minute film. (Hungarian strudel making is documented all the way back to the 15th century.)
Insider Tip:
Check out a fun design touch in the restaurant's bathrooms: clear glass sinks situated atop velvet-lined showcases housing old-school Budapest knick-knacks.
