One of the five museums on Berlin’s Museum Island, the Bode Museum opened in 1904. The museum is renowned for its Museum of Byzantine Art, as well as its impressive Sculpture Collection. The Museum of Byzantine Art displays works from the Byzantine and Roman Empires between the third and 15th centuries, including Roman sarcophagi and Christian iconography. The Sculpture Collection has works by such masters as Donatello and Desiderio da Settignano. Another museum highlight is the Numismatic Collection, which contains more than 500,000 coins and medals dating from the seventh century to the present.
