One of Berlin’s most important art museums, the Alte Nationalgalerie, or Old National Gallery, is one of five museums located on the city’s famed Museum Island. The building, which resembles a Greek temple, was designed by Friedrich August Stüler and was constructed between 1866 and 1876. The museum’s collection, founded on the personal collection of J.H.W. Wagener, is composed of 19th century paintings and sculptures and includes works by such renowned artists as Manet, Degas, and Renoir. Guided tours must be arranged in advance by contacting the hotel.
