2455 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley, CA 94704, United States

Housed in Berkeley’s historic Amoeba building—the center of the city’s Free Speech Movement during the 1960’s—this iconic shop is billed as the world’s largest independent music store. One of three regional locations, this flagship is hard to miss: a giant rainbow arches over the façade, while the side wall is covered with a mural entitled People’s Park, depicting scenes from a 60’s-era protest. Inside, the store is filled with thousands of CD’s and LP’s representing nearly every imaginable genre, from hip-hop and indie rock to world music and obscure jazz. Movies, posters, and T-shirts are available, as well.
