Yonghegong was originally a residence for eunuchs before half of the complex was converted into a Tibetan Buddhist lamasery in 1722. The centerpiece of the building is a Guinness Book of World Records-worthy 26-meter tall statue of the Buddha carved from a single piece of white sandalwood.
