Three Stones Kite Company
Kite flying is a hugely popular pastime in Beijing: visit Tiananmen Square on a breezy day and you’ll see scores of people—tots, teens, old-timers—watching their colorful kites flutter and bob over Chairman Mao’s tomb. The family-run Three Stones Kite store provides heavy-duty kites for serious aficionados, along with more delicate models for decorative purposes. Prices range from $3 for a simple printed kite up to $1,400 for a magnificent all-red kite in the shape of the Chinese character for longevity. The store’s most popular souvenir kite is an $85 hand-painted silk model, available in the shape of an eagle, dragon, goldfish, turtle, or butterfly and sold in a decorative box.
