From dirt-cheap street food to opulent multi-course dinners, this is a foodie’s haven, and the best restaurants in Beijing span the spectrum, from traditional to modern. Having served as the capital of China for centuries, its local cuisine is heavily influenced by other culinary traditions, like Hui (Chinese Islamic) and Shandong cooking. As a northern city, Beijing also excels at staples like buns (stuffed and plain), noodles, all manner of bing (pancakes), and jiaozi (dumplings).

The city is famous for Peking roast duck, a specialty at many Beijing restaurants. There is often street food sold from carts (to try with discretion) that open early and late for breakfast and late-night meals.

In recent years, there’s been a steady increase in quality western restaurants among places to eat in Beijing. Fine dining establishments like Capital M remain rare, but casual eateries like Moka Bros, Palms LA Kitchen and Bar, Taco Bar, and Home Plate BBQ have found a foothold with locals and expats alike.
