Considered the finest example of Catalan Modernist architecture, this 600-year-old former hospital is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The result of six small hospitals merging together in 1401, the original complex was rebuilt to meet the demands of modern medicine in 1902. The new hospital, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, was built with the patients’ wellbeing in mind. The complex is comprised of 20 light, airy pavilions decorated with Byzantine, Gothic, and Moorish motifs, including mosaics, gargoyles, angels, and floral designs. Outside, shaded gardens are filled with sculptures by well-known 20th-century artists. Guided tours are available daily.
