Things to do in Bar Harbor

The combination of walkable streets, good food and the great outdoors—for hiking, biking or fishing—make up the prime things to do in Bar Harbor.

If there is any spot that typifies Maine’s rugged beauty, it’s this Acadia National Park, which is easily of the top things to do in Bar Harbor. On it 120 miles of pine-fringed trails, you’re pretty much guaranteed some good moose-spotting. Don’t miss the 1,530-foot Cadillac Mountain, the highest peak on the Eastern Seaboard; it's the place to see the sunrise of a lifetime. (And don’t worry: you can drive to the top if you like.) Take a trip to visit the Abbe Museum. The 17,000-square-foot space is the only museum in Maine that’s affiliated with the Smithsonian. You’ll see exhibits about how archeologists worked to uncover the past of this area’s indigenous tribes, as well as an impressive collection of Native American artifacts that have been found on Mount Desert Island. If you’re thinking about what to do in Bar Harbor with the kids, the museum often does children’s activities, too. Stroll (and rubber-neck) along the Shore Path. This wide trail by the water offers a nice vantage point of both the water—and the prettiest inns and private homes in town.
