Masculine yet cozy, the 225-room Back Bay Hotel is laden with history: the 1925 limestone edifice with ornate friezes fronts one of Boston’s last Italian Renaissance Revival buildings, which was police headquarters for 70 years. There are some design misfires—ignore the incongruously high-tech chrome-and-glass lobby staircase—but the guest rooms are traditionally handsome, with cherrywood furniture and decorative ceiling moldings. Irish breakfast at the in-house Stanhope Grille is a classic Celtic affair, with rashers, baked beans, and black-and-white pudding.
