Maria's Taco Xpress
Don’t let the pedestrian name fool you: Maria's Taco Xpress is not a fast-food joint. Rather, it is a characteristically offbeat South Austin hangout specializing in Tex-Mex classics with the occasional live music act. The décor is a deliberately ramshackle mix of folk art, highlighted by murals and a plaster statue of the restaurant’s namesake, Maria Corbalan, the self-proclaimed “Taco Queen of South Austin.” The all-day menu features Mexican street food classics, such as chilaquiles (a mix of eggs, tortilla chips, salsa, and cheese) and tacos al pastor.
Insider Tip:
If you like the food, the restaurant sells Maria's spices and chimichuri sauce, as well as a recipe book.
