The Harry Ransom Center, on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin, has an enormous collection of literary manuscripts — more than 36 million pages — spanning the history of Western civilization. Its collection includes a copy of the Gutenberg Bible, the first book published with moveable type, one of only 48 in existence; a Shakespeare folio; a first edition of Alice in Wonderland; and a Ulysses proof with Joyce’s handwritten margin notes. Other artifacts include a Mercator globe and the Watergate-era notes of Bernstein and Woodward.
