285 W. Washington St., Athens, GA 30601, United States

One of the most acclaimed indie rock venues in the South, the 40 Watt Club hosts a wide variety of established and emerging bands in an intimate, informal setting. With a history dating back to 1978, the club helped launch the career of Athens-based performers like R.E.M., Pylon, the Indigo Girls, and Of Montreal. Despite its emphasis on local music, the venue also brings in international acts, including past performers Motörhead, Keane, and M.I.A. The club contains a handful of couches and chairs, although it’s usually standing room only during concerts. Two bars flank the stage and serve inexpensive libations.
